Seasonal Employment

What is Seasonal Employment?

Seasonal employment refers to temporary work or employment status that helps employers meet staffing needs during holidays, high seasons, or other peak business periods. It involves recurring work periods of less than 12 months in a year.

These work periods are tied to specific times of the year when businesses experience increased demand or activity. Seasonal employees are considered permanent employees but are placed in non-duty/non-pay status when not actively working and are recalled to duty based on pre-established conditions of employment.

Seasonal Employment Examples:

  • Businesses that operate only during part of the year, such as tourist destinations, amusement parks, and seasonal resorts, often rely on seasonal employees to handle peak visitor periods.
  • Many retailers experience a surge in business during the holiday shopping season. To accommodate this increased demand, they hire extra workers for temporary positions.

Note: Most seasonal employment is part-time, although some full-time positions may also be available. Depending on the employer, location, and time of year, seasonal jobs can last from a few weeks to several months.
